100th Post!!!

So here we are. Believe it or not this is the 100th post since we started this blog. When we started this blog I never would have believed we would have kept in running long enough to hit 100 posts, but then I never would have guessed life would have taken the turns it has either.
Well, anyway you look at it here we all are at the 100th post. So we thought we would spend this post inundating you with such an obnoxious number of pictures you will probably throw us.
Well...enjoy. We certainly have.Parker, looking and feeling a little crabby. She had been holding onto her work again.
But still...she loves her "mummy"
Emma Jane got the jackolantern clothes
Later we decided to stuff her clothes so she looked even more pumkin like. Oh, the horrible things parents do to their children for the sake of "cuteness."
Of course that was hardly the worst of it. You still haven't seen their official "costumes"
What were they?
Well...look.

We decided that for Halloween they should be what they are: 2 peas in a pod

In case you couldn't tell. Parker is on the right (note monkey) and Emma Jane is on the left (note leg of owl). Actually some these pictures are from last weekend. We put them in their costumes then because we really weren't sure whether they would fit today. We managed to get them in today, but just barely. Those stinkers are getting big!
No matter what they may tell us alter in life...they like each other

"Hey...I'm napping here. I don't care how cute you look, leave me alone or I'll give you something to wave your arms about"
So the girls might even get famous from this outfit. The BJC newspaper (yes the hospital is big enough to have a hospital based newspaper) swung by to take a picture for the next issue.

You sick of this yet? Well, just one more photo to sit through.

The Woods

So the question of the hour seems to be…Are the girls out of the woods?
Weeeeeeelllllll I wouldn’t say that.
Of course a very popular joke for people to make during this whole event is that there will never be a time when we don’t have to worry about them.
All that said there will be a time, Lord willing, when we’re doing the worrying in the non-hospital sort of way. Which brings us back to the question: are we out of the woods? That’s hard to answer. We’re certainly not in the deep dark heart of the woods, but I wouldn’t say that we were in a clear and open field either. There are still trees around but there is more then enough space between them so the sunlight can get in. Most of our concerns are no longer death related; rather they center on any long term ramifications and what we need to do to get them home. So far all signs point toward the girls developing normally and there are no obvious signs of complications. A lot of this will be something that plays out over time. After the girls finally do go home they will be followed by the doctors at the hospital for the next three years. (If you read that last sentence again you will note a key component to where things are…after the girls finally do go home) All in all things are going in the right direction and we’re very happy.
Granny and Paw Paw came for a short visit this week. Here's a shot of them holding the girls.

Emma Jane snoozing

Parker....I swear she was rolling her eyes at me...already. Oh those teenage years will be hard.

Emma Jane: "Five more minutes mom, just let me sleep for five more minutes. Then I'll get up, I promise."

Parker: "So...pops...daddy...what's up?"

Assuming I still have your attention, I might as well briefly address the other question which has been repeatedly asked of me: Where's the posts?
Well, I must admit that my Aunt Nancy's comment from yesterday's post is definitely part of the reason. However there was an ulterior motive this week as well. I decided I wanted to the 100th post to go up on October 31/Reformation Day/Halloween/All Hallow's Eve. And I decided I really really wanted the 101st post to go up on November 1st. Why? Well you'll have to wait and see, I'll go ahead and warn you that you it's really not worth they hype...but hopefully you'll tune in anyway. In the meantime...here is a sneak peak of tomorrow's post.

Mercy Abounds

I never cease to be amazed at God's mercy to us. The list of tangible mercies which go along with this experience is too long to list. What I present here is partial at best.
-Mary Jane got pregnant
-We got a local vicarage
-We're at Salem specifically (they really have been such a help during all this)
-They are girls (girls have a significantly better chance of pulling through this type of experience)
-After the water broke the girls stayed in for over 48 hours giving steroids a chance to do their thing on the lungs.
-We're at St. Louis Children's NICU with its staff of nurses and doctors
-Their PDA ligations went smoothly
-They have not, thus far, developed an infection
-They are weaning off of oxygen (still on...but heading in the right direction)
-They have not had any major head bleeds
-They are in the same room
-They are growing
-They are learning to eat, and not just be fed through an NG tube
-They are wearing clothes
-They are four pounds
-and oh yeah...there is this...

Those, my friends, are open air cribs. That's right....these girls are in CRIBS!!!! C R I B S!!!

We said goodbye to the giraffes. We sent them back to their watering hole deep in the recesses of the hospital. And said HELLO to a little piece of normalcy.
Are we excited? Is the pope Catholic? Of course we're excited.
Sure they need to have 15 layers of clothes on, but then so do researchers living in Antarctica so....you know...it's normal some where.
Now why doesn't dad look excited in this picture? Well that would be because he's exhausted and falling asleep. There's nothing like putting a snugly baby on your chest. The moment you do WHAM you start falling asleep. It's like babies emit some type of aura that takes all your stress momentarily away and boom. The exhaustion catches up to you and you think "...." because you can't think of anything else, because you're falling asleep. So no, dad doesn't look excited here, but know that while he is exhausted it is an excited exhaustion.

"Dear Lord, please do not let them have my big shnozola. Amen"

um...why are the extra blankets on that side? Well...like I said...tired

Dumb post

Parker: Such a busy day. First I was a gangster. "No pictures, No pictures"
While doing that I realized how amazing my hand is. Really truly amazing. Did you know it's all there? Once I started I just couldn't stop. After an indeterminate amount of time I began to realize I was mesmerized. I had mesmerized myself. Evidently I have special mesmerizing powers. After a while I decided to try them out on a volunteer. "Can I have a volunteer?"
"Ooh, Ooh. Call on me. Call on me."I call on my seester, Emma Jane. Seester, you are under my spell. You are under my control. You are flying
"Um...I hate to tell you this, but...um...I'm still just lying here in my isolette. But I will say this much, it is fun to raise my hands."
"Hmm. I think maybe with mesmerizing, you're just supposed think you are flying, but not actually be flying."

"Well...I think I'm in my isolette"

Parker: Well maybe my super power is that I can only mesmerize myself.

Spotlight on Large group…er…small church…um….small group…yeah...that

We can’t say enough about our small group. This blog could easily be devoted to how cool everyone in the group is. In many ways it was the small group who helped us decide that we could maybe…just maybe survive this whole St. Louis experience. We moved to Saint Louis right after getting married in 2004, knowing that eventually I would get to the seminary. We knew no one in town, and it was pretty hard. We joined the small group in November, and by the New Year we had our St. Louis family.
They have been an important part of our lives for four years now. There is no way I could possibly sum up all the ways they have been a blessing to us over the years. So I won’t try.
But I will say this. They prayed for us for three years as we struggled to get pregnant. (Dave even fasted). They cried with us and for us. They cried tears of joy when they found out Mary Jane was pregnant. When the “great escape” began they mobilized faster then 137th on D day. Holly picked up Nana from the airport. Brian picked up Emily from the train station. Liz acted as a contact person and poured out information. They (along with many others) have brought meals. Dave, Charlie, Chris, and Jon finished priming the baby’s room, painted the room, and even mowed the lawn. Charlie came by randomly after church one Sunday (while I was at Salem preaching) and dropped off fresh home made bread (made by his wife Holly) and seeing the lawn needed mowing again…mowed it. Let me tell you coming home after church planning on changing clothes rapidly in order to rush over to the hospital, and finding fresh bread and a cut lawn was … well there really aren’t words. Liz made the blankets which you see in the background of a number of photos as well as some hats and shrugs. They have run errands, they have eaten lunch with us, they have put their arms around us, and they have prayed. They have prayed, and prayed, and prayed. (Some have even taught their little kids to pray for Parker and Emma Jane).
Last night they threw us an “upright bath.” It was the longest period of time we’ve all been together since this all began, and in many ways it felt like home. We ate, we played games, we talked, we received gifts (thank you) and Jenny put together the most awesome book you could ever imagine. (Really, this thing is an amazing. It had Mary Jane in tears before we even had it opened. I’m really going to need to take a picture of every page and blog about it, but I don’t know if that will do it justice. All the families in the small group contributed to it and Jenny put it together. It’s…well…amazing. Thanks!)
I could go on and on….in fact I probably should. I have only scratched the surface of the ways in which they have been there for us. Forgive me for not mentioning everything. For the things you have done that I haven’t listed here…we know…and we are so thankful.

Thank You!!

oddities

So I'm holding Parker tonight and she's being a little fussy and she's making sucking motions with her mouth. So I reach for her binky, but because of where I'm sitting I just can't quite reach it. And then I figured, hey wait a minute, we used to try and get her to suck on her fingers, now we never do. Now I couldn't reach her binky but her fingers...they were pretty close. Her arms were flailing around a little anyway so I took one hand and gently placed her fingers near her mouth. Parker's tongue flicked out a little and touched one finger. As soon as she had done that her eyes shot open, her other arm just fell and she shoved her whole hand into her mouth. I wish I could've gotten gotten video of it, it was one of the funniest things I've seen. She was just so excited about sucking her hand. She couldn't get that hand far enough in her mouth. Eventually it was more than I could take and I began laughing. Which startled her and her hand fell out of her mouth. She just sort of looked up at me as if to say "What?"

“Emma Jane is phat” or “an upright bath”

So Emma Jane is putting on the grams like a champ lately. She’s getting HUGE. (which is a good thing). Parker, always the rebel, is putting on weight a little more slowly, but she is putting it on.(above, a picture of Emma Jane taken while we were changing her today. Look at that girl! She's getting so big! Below, Emma Jane while Parker was screaming near by)

Parker finally stopped fussing and began sucking on her binky like her life depended on it.

Mary Jane had an “upright bath” on Sunday. We have to call it this because the s word has been outlawed in our family. As some of you faithful readers may recall, Mary Jane was supposed to have an upright bath in Chattanooga the day the girls were born. Then Parker had her PDA liegation on the day Mary Jane’s work was throwing her an upright bath. We suspect the girls don’t like the s word and are purposely causing mischief when they hear it…so the word has been banned.
This upright bath was a reschedule of the one the work one. She had a great time and we really appreciate all the baby loot which came out of it. Thanks girls!

In their own words

(The following has been meticulously translated from the native language of babies. There are a few portions of this document which were untranslatable. Many do not realize how difficult the native language of babies is. Where as, a language such as Chinese or Japanese is difficult due to the sheer volume of characters involved, babeze (the native language of babies) suffers from the exact opposite problem. In total there are only five “words” and no characters. The use of the word “word” here is perhaps misleading. They are not so much words as emanations of sound which are created in order to provide various meanings. Five is only an approximation. The exact number of sounds is hard to calculate due to the various varieties of baby in existence today. This particular document was translated from a “preemie”. The sounds our translator worked with included: scream, grunt, snort, sigh, meuheheh. What makes babeze particularly hard to translate is that it each sound can be nuanced in countless ways to bring out new and exciting meanings. Things affecting meaning include, but are not limited to, tone, volume, length of sound, repetition, speed, and the contents of their diaper. With a few of these complexities in mind it is hoped you will understand that portions of the document have yet to be translated, and may never be translatable.)

Document B: Baby formerly known as ‘B’ – Miss “Emma Jane” Broge
“Dearest Mother and Father. Thank you for bringing me into this world. It should be known that it was not my idea to enter this stage a life in such a dramatic and premature fashion. The sibling which was being knitted together next to me in the womb is entirely to blame for this misadventure. All in all she is good sort of baby, however she is a bit too… meuheheh…for my taste. I suppose we all have our crosses to bear, and she may be mine. Never fear parents, I will do my best to bring her up to emulate me, but you should prepare yourself for what is inevitably going to be a long difficult road. Do not worry about me, I shall continue down the path I have started on, until I feel as though my erstwhile sibling is getting entirely too much of the attention in this family unit, at which point I shall do something unexpectedly drastic and terrible in a bid to get the attention of you my parents, and in my own eyes your love. But do not be too hard on yourselves. You are both excellent examples of parents. You have some flaws, but remember you have only been parents for a few short weeks, where I have been a baby my entire life. In closing let me just assure you that we are both aware of your love for us and we reciprocate that emotion in the highest. Thank you for all you have done for us.
Sincerely, with much love and respect
Your daughter, Emma Jane”

stories

Parker does this a lot. It's cute and funny. (For that matter Emma Jane does it a lot too)

So I took to telling the girls stories today. I tried to stick to some of the classic kid stories/songs, but I put the girls into the stories. So, “Little Bunny Foofoo” became “Little Baby Broge…crawling through the forest, scooping up the field mice and patting them on the head. And down came the gooood mommy, and she said….you get the idea.
Then there was “Three little monkeys jumping on the bed” although (obviously) this time it was only two monkeys. So it went more like “Two little monkeys jumping on the bed, Parker fell off and bumped her head. Momma was the doctor and the momma said…” again, you get the idea. Finally we rounded story/song time off with a rousing rendition of the three little pigs, or the two little monkeys in this case. The two little monkeys were chased out of their houses by the big bad wolf and then they went to daddy’s house for protection. When the big bad wolf came to daddy’s house, daddy stepped outside with a shotgun and scarred off the big bad wolf. The big bad wolf went home to his mother crying because he was scared of the daddy. The mother wolf told her son he was foolish for having gone to the daddy’s house at all for everyone knows, “never mess with daddy.”
The girls really liked the story, and while they were hoping for an encore presentation daddy insisted it was way past bed time, and as he looks at the clock he sees it is for all of us little monkeys, and so…sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite.
Please dad...no more
You make me want to pull out my tubes....come to think of it everything makes me want to pull out my tubes...you know what? I'm going to pull out my tubes. That'd be fun! Why haven't I ever thought of this before? What's that? I have thought of that before? I've done it before? You're always trying to stop me? That's funny, cause I don't remember doing it before. Of course, my memory isn't all that good these days. Hey...you know what? I've got this brilliant idea. I'm going to pull out my tubes. That'd be fun! Why haven't I ever though of this before?

"Where's the camera?" or "I just want to hold my babies"

Friday was my day off. I spent the entire day with the girls at the hospital. It was awesome. The only thing which could have made it better is if Mary Jane was there too. But since she was at work, and since she specifically was working on my day off so someone could be there with the girls, the chances of having a day with her anytime soon are really small. And since we're in fantasy land, the 0nly thing which could have made this day better would be all four of us safely at home together for the day. Now that would be pretty fantastic, and Lord willing...it is coming.
It's amazing how fast the day goes. I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll say it a million times before this is all said and done, but the hospital is a strange sort of time warp. You don't feel like you've done anything, but before you know it....bam it's 8 or 9 oclock at night.
Unfortunately I forgot the camera, so no new pictures of the girls. Which is too bad, I got the chance to bathe them in the tub, held them both and generally had a good time hanging out with my daughters. Meanwhile Mary Jane was upstairs waiting as her internal clock slowly brought her to the meltdown point at the end of the day. She holds it together well until the last few minutes and then if anything happens which will make her stay late she melts down....cause..."sob...sniff....I just...snif...sob...want to hold my babies".

"Things they are a changing" or "Grow baby Grow"

Okay. Today was a long day and I didn't get to see the girls until late in the game, which meant I stayed later, and means I am getting home later and means that I'm not going to take a lot of time right now to post. Sorry. There are pictures, but none of them are new. After last night's post I heard a lot of comments about how big the girls have gotten. And they have. They are huge giant babies (weighing in around 3 lbs 4 ounces each!). I thought it might be interesting to do a little picture comparison.
